AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission test)

The AFCAT exam, or Air Force Common Admission Test, is a national-level exam conducted by the Indian Air Force to select officers for Flying, Ground Duty (Technical), and Ground Duty (Non-Technical) branches.

It is held twice a year and is aimed at selecting candidates for the prestigious Air Force Academy, Hyderabad.

Branches in the Indian Air Force

Flying Branch

Responsible for flying fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters. Pilots ensure air defence, reconnaissance, and strategic missions

Ground Duty (Technical)

Engineers who handle aircraft systems, weapons, radar, and maintenance to keep the Air Force combat-ready.

Ground Duty (Non-Technical)

Officers who manage administration, logistics, accounts, education, and meteorology, ensuring smooth operations of the IAF

Eligibility

Both male and female candidates are allowed to apply for AFCAT. 

 Age Limit

  • Flying Branch - 20 to 24 years
  • Ground Duty (Tech & Non-Tech): 20 to 26 years.

 Educational Qualification

 Flying branch - Candidates must have scored a minimum of 50% marks each in Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level and hold a Graduate degree with 60% marks in any discipline or a B.E./B.Tech with 60% marks.
 Ground Duty (Technical) - Candidates must have completed 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics and hold a B.E./B.Tech degree in a relevant engineering branch with 60% marks.
 Ground Duty (Non-Technical) - Graduate in any discipline with 60% marks OR post-graduation as per the branch requirements..

Training

After clearing AFCAT, candidates train at the Air Force Academy, Hyderabad for 52 to 74 weeks, focusing on discipline, leadership, academics, and specialized skills before commissioning as officers in the Indian Air Force.

Salary, Ranks and Promotion

This may change as per the latest Pay Commission. Please check the official website for updates

After completing training, candidates are commissioned as Flying Officers in the Indian Air Force with a starting salary of around ₹56,100 per month (Level 10 pay matrix) along with allowances and benefits

SELECTION PROCEDURE

AFCAT (Computer Based Test)

The first stage of the UPSC CDS selection procedure is the Written Examination, which tests knowledge in English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics (for IMA, INA, AFA) or English and General Knowledge (for OTA).

SSB Interview (AFSB)

A 5-day process including screening, psychology tests, group tasks, personal interview, and conference to assess Officer Like Qualities. One need to get recommended by SSB which is the second step.

Medical Examination

Comprehensive health check in military hospitals covering eyesight, hearing, fitness standards, and absence of diseases or deformities. 

4

Final Merit List

Prepared by UPSC on the basis of written Exam score and SSB marks. Only medically fit candidates are considered for admission to NDA.
